"A Subtle Change" (微弱な変化, Bijakuna Henka) is a short story from Toranoana's store privilege for volume 8 of 2nd Year arc of You-Zitsu light novel series, together with four other short stories.
Summary[]
In the early morning, a lively snowball fight unfolds among the second-year students. Miki Yamamura, who typically leads a low-key and solitary life, can't help but feel a sense of confusion as she unexpectedly finds herself immersed in the cheerful atmosphere. This change from her usual routine surprises her, as she had planned to keep a low profile during the school trip.
Kiyotaka Ayanokōji, however, approaches Miki, initiating a conversation and noting the festivity of the snowball fight. His proactive and sociable behavior marks a noticeable change from his usual reserved demeanor. Miki responds by acknowledging the fun of the activity. During their conversation, Ayanokōji observes that Miki has bare hands and teases her about forgetting her gloves. She initially pretends to go along with the joke but quickly admits that she has her gloves with her. Ayanokōji, though his expression remains composed, responds in a way that hints at a deepening sense of friendship between them.
Miki begins to reflect on the sense of belonging she has found within the group of friends that has formed during the school trip. This group includes both girls and boys, and they have accepted her, even though she usually goes unnoticed due to her unassuming presence. Miki expresses her gratitude for this newfound companionship and the experiences she has shared with the group.
As the school trip that was initially intended for her to investigate their 'enemy', approaches its conclusion, Miki starts to question her initial feelings about the trip and her role within the group. The school trip had left her with a sense of uncertainty about her own feelings and the true purpose of her mission.
