Summary[]
The chapter begins with a monologue from Karuizawa Kei. She says that she knows herself better than anyone and knows what her strengths and weaknesses are; therefore, she thinks that there is no boy or girl who can be like her. And although she is aware of that, she knows that nothing is going to change is she goes on this way. She then adds that no matter what anyone thinks, she would do anything in her power to keep surviving as she didn't want to relieve 'that' again.
At 2 O' clock in the night, Kiyotaka, who was sleeping in his bedroom, noticed that Hirata had gotten up from his bed and was leaving the room; he also got up and followed after him. Seeing him, Hirata asks if he woke because of him, but Kiyotaka replies that he knew he would be going out tonight. While Hirata was wondering how he could have predicted it, Kiyotaka guessed that it was because Karuizawa must have contacted him to come see her. Hirata then asks him how much he knows about the matter. To which he replies that he knows about the problem to some degree since he was in the same group as her; however, Kiyotaka suspected that this would not be enough of a reason to convince Hirata to let him go with him, so he tells him that he is just being the bridge between Horikita and Hirata just as he was previously asked. Kiyotaka states that she had asked him to inform her of anything going on in the Rabbit group, and after telling her about Karuizawa's situation, she asked him to watch Hirata as well; but since Hirata wanted him to be the bridge between the two, he decided to confess about it to Hirata directly. Understanding this, Hirata wants to know what information Suzune needs, and he replies that she wants to know everything Hirata knows about Karuizawa. He was unsure about giving her this information because he had to consider her feelings. So, the two of them decide to meet Karuizawa so that the three of them can discuss the matter in person.
Seeing Hirata, Karuizawa was happy and greeted him, but after seeing that Kiyotaka come with him, her face showed a displeased expression. She asks Hirata why he brought Kiyotaka, and Hirata replies that he had appeared him because he seemed to understand the situation as well. Hirata asks her to explain the dispute she had with Manabe and her friends, but she still preferred the two of them to talk alone. Kiyotaka mentions that she doesn't need to explain him as he and Yukimura had also witnessed the incident, and confirms that the girls from Class C used violence against her. Hirata believed that the incident had started because of them, but Kiyotaka corrects him by saying that apparently it all started because Karuizawa had bullied Rika, one of their classmates. Now that he knows how it all started, Hirata comments that he now understands why she had asked him something like that. Kiyotaka didn't understand what he meant, so Hirata explains him that Karuizawa wanted him to take revenge for her against Manabe and her friends. She argues that if he really is her boyfriend he should help her when she is in trouble, but Hirata replies that he's not in favor of using violence to solve things. He asks her to apologize to them, but Karuizawa reiterates that they were the ones who attacked him one-sidedly. When asked why she bullied Rika, Kei informed Hirata that Shinohara and her friends were watching her. Soon after, Karuizawa loses her composure and starts begging him to protect her; Hirata assures him that he will protect him, but adds that he will find a peaceful way to work things out. She repeats that it's impossible, but he tells her that no matter what the reason, he won't use violence to hurt others. Karuizawa calls him a liar, since he had promised her that he would protect her unconditionally. However, Hirata reminds him that he made his point clear from the beginning that the two of them are not a real couple, and while he doesn't mind pretending they are, he won't help her in a way that hurt others. He said that he would find a new way to help her.
