"Trial Date" (模擬デート, Mogi Dēto) is a short story for You-Zitsu light novel series, included within "KADOKAWA Light Novel EXPO2020 Official Commemorative Book Sakura Collaboration!" (KADOKAWAライトノベルEXPO2020 公式記念本 サクラ コラボレーション!, KADOKAWA Raito Noberu EXPO2020 Kōshiki Kinen hon Sakura Koraborēshon!), a special collaboration book from the KADOKAWA Light Novel EXPO 2020 event.
Summary[]
After school, just before the island exam starts, Kiyotaka Ayanokōji and Kei Karuizawa go on a "trial date" at Keyaki Mall, a popular place for students. Since the fact they are dating remains a secret, the couple arrive and wander around the store separately and talk through messaging.
Kei finds a phone strap with a cute little cat and sends an image of it to Kiyotaka. He asks whether she likes that kind of things, then replies with a picture of another phone strap with skulls and crosses, saying that it's something he thought she would prefer instead. Kei complains that Kiyotaka's sense is horrible, then tells him she wants to look around more.
After exchanging those few messages, Kei continues checking out the store and other places. She has mixed feelings on the trial date as it is enjoyable but also lonely, and expresses her wish of wanting to go on a proper date with Kiyotaka as soon as possible.
Later that day, in the evening, there is a knock on Kei's door. When she goes out to check, she finds only a small paper bag with pink ribbons. Kei opens it to see the cat strap inside and lets out a laugh. She says that something like that isn't enough to satisfy her, while attaching the cat strap and removing all the other ones on her phone, then spends the rest of the night gazing at it.
